The film, which will compete at the Hollywood Oscars, has been produced by American Humane in collaboration with Loro Parque.

Today, Loro Parque hosted the world premiere of the film Escape from Extinction, produced by American Humane. The documentary, narrated by actress Meryl Streep, is part of the awareness-raising efforts carried out by the organization and Loro Parque regarding the sixth mass extinction of species. Over the course of 90 minutes, the film delves into the various scenarios of natural devastation the world is currently facing, highlighting the human causes behind them, and most importantly, showcasing the efforts made by zoos and aquariums around the world to reverse this process.

However, as Dr. Robin Ganzert stated, “there is still hope for the recovery of species. There is always hope.”

The documentary explores the various efforts that zoos and aquariums worldwide are developing to achieve what they call rewilding: a process of habitat restoration and the reintroduction of species into these spaces, with a special focus on the collaboration of local communities.

In her remarks, Robin Ganzert explained the value of private organizations in carrying out these actions, emphasizing that from these entities, the long, complex, and costly processes of species reintroduction can be launched and sustained.

The president of the Loro Parque Group, Wolfgang Kiessling, described the essential work that zoos and aquariums like Loro Parque and Poema de Mar, committed to nature, are doing, highlighting the achievements of the organization in collaboration with the Loro Parque Foundation: “The achievements are there. Twelve species rescued from extinction. These are real and verifiable facts.” He also recalled the success of the reintroduction of the Lear’s Macaw, which, after its return to its habitat, is now reproducing naturally.

American Humane is currently the largest certifier in the world in the areas of animal welfare, in environments managed by humans, including zoos, aquariums, and farms. Their AH supervision protocols reach about one billion animals worldwide.

This production is the second that the organization has produced on the topic of the sixth mass extinction, following the previous Escape from Extinction narrated by Helen Mirren. After its pre-release in Tenerife, the film will travel to London and will be shown in theaters across the United States to compete in the documentary section of the Academy Awards at the upcoming Hollywood Oscars.
